Starting with simple slab construction elevated on coiled feet I then incorporate various textures using my handmade stamps, cloth, wallpaper, and carving are used to embellish the surface resulting in a more interesting “canvas”. I then paint wax resist designs with a brush into which I inlay glazes. The result is a very three dimensional feeling on a two dimensional surface. My firing range varies from cone 06 through cone 10 depending on the finished result I am trying to achieve. My work reflects various design sensibilities. The historical influences come from African, Chinese, Japanese and Celtic cultures and their artifacts, combined with my love of graphic arts. My early years in art started out as a painter and illustrator. I have always lived and played in the ocean so it is natural that water symbols, fish, real and mythological sea life design elements appear often in my work.
Most of my work is created at my ceramics studio in San Clemente, California where I live with my wonderful husband. Our two grown children also live in California. |
